Fun Winter Activities in the South Island

June 30, 2019

In addition to heading to the many ski areas around the South Island of New Zealand ready to ski or snowboard, there are plenty of other outdoor fun things to do in the winter months.

We've included some of the many options for you below.

Tekapo Springs

Set on the shores of Lake Tekapo, Tekapo Springs is a modern complex offering hot pools with view of the lake and mountains, ice skating, ice hockey, snow tubing, curling and a night sky star gazing experience.

Indoors they also have a full spa offering relaxing massage and beauty treatments.

Tekapo Springs at night

So parking up in Tekapo for a few days would give you plenty of time to truly enjoy everything this stunning location has to offer.

Check out their website and make sure you book ahead as indicated on the site.

Maruia Hot Springs

Located north of Christchurch in the Lewis Pass, this remote spot is magical and offers a relaxing retreat with your choice of natural hot pools, sauna and more.

One tip for the unaware - make sure you take some bug repellant as the sandflies can be a nuisance at certain times of year (in the outdoor pools).

They also have packages for campervans.

Lake Tekapo - Nordic/Cross Country Skiing

If you can walk, you can ski nordic! Cross-country skiing is recognised as being one of the healthiest forms of exercise there are, giving a total body workout with both arm and leg stretching, breathing in clean mountain air and taking in beautiful scenery on the way.

Add to that the fun of the rewarding downhill and some cosy relaxation by the fire at night and you have the ideal holiday.
